Set up your email in Outlook on Windows
Add your work email to the Outlook desktop app on a Windows PC or laptop.
About ten minutes. You will need your email address and password, and the settings from Your email settings.
These steps cover both the classic Outlook desktop app and the newer Outlook for Windows.
Steps
Open Outlook.
Go to File ‚Üí Add Account. In the new Outlook, click the settings cog ‚Üí Accounts ‚Üí Add account.
Type your full email address.
Before clicking Connect, click Advanced options and tick Let me set up my account manually.
If you miss this, Outlook tries to guess and usually fails in a way that is harder to recover from than doing it manually. If it has already failed, close and start again from step 2.
Choose IMAP.
Fill in:
Incoming mail
- Server:
imap.yourdomain.com - Port:
993 - Encryption method: SSL/TLS
Outgoing mail
- Server:
smtp.yourdomain.com - Port:
465 - Encryption method: SSL/TLS
- Server:
Click Next, enter your email password, and click Connect.
Check it worked
Send yourself an email from another account and reply to it.
If it does not work
Outlook keeps asking for the password
Close Outlook completely, reopen it, and enter the password once more. If it still asks, the password itself is wrong — type it into a plain text document first to check, then copy and paste it.
"Something went wrong" with no detail
This usually means Outlook auto-detected the wrong settings before you got to the manual screen. Remove the account under File ‚Üí Account Settings, then start again and tick Let me set up my account manually at step 4.
Sending fails, receiving works
Go to File ‚Üí Account Settings ‚Üí your account ‚Üí Change ‚Üí More Settings ‚Üí Outgoing Server and tick My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
